There is now real confusion about what kind of man Obama will be up against as the race enters its final stretch. Listen to what McCain said on Tuesday night in Louisiana as he was marking the point at which the presidential race proper with Obama truly began. “The American people didn’t get to know me yesterday, as they are just getting to know Senator Obama,” he said, playing the experience card. But it is not at all certain that he is right about that. Do the American people know McCain? Or put it another way; which version of himself will he present to the American people? Will it be Old John McCain, the fiercely independent maverick? Or will it be the gun-loving, tax-cutting tub-thumper to which the NRA was treated in Kentucky? Will the real John McCain please stand up.
