several months ago, john mccain was endorsed by reverend john hagee, a charming man who believes in an apocalyptic showdown between the west and the east, with jesus christ himself intervening and protecting the west:
“Russia is going to get in that position and they are literally, with all that massive military force, going to attack Israel,” Hagee told ABC News in 2006. “This is recorded in Ezekiel 38 and 39. God himself is literally going to destroy that army. Decimate it.”
Hagee added that the confrontation would be followed by a Chinese army of 200 million coming to the city of Armageddon, where they will meet British and U.S. forces in the Battle of Armageddon.
“At that point, Jesus Christ returns to Earth and sets up his eternal kingdom in the city of Jerusalem and there’s 1000 years of peace,” Hagee said. “The Jewish people are going to see the supernatural hand of God preserve them and deliver them while the enemies of Israel are crushed. That’s the end-time story.”
and he continues:
The United States must join Israel in a pre-emptive military strike against Iran to fulfill God’s plan for both Israel and the West… a biblically prophesied end-time confrontation with Iran, which will lead to the Rapture, Tribulation, and Second Coming of Christ.
but wait there’s more….
the good reverend also calls the catholic church ‘The Great Whore,’ an ‘apostate church,’ the ‘anti-Christ,’ and a ‘false cult system.’ as the catholic league reports:
“In Hagee’s latest book, Jerusalem Countdown, he calls Hitler a Catholic who murdered Jews while the Catholic Church did nothing. ‘The sell-out of Catholicism to Hitler began not with the people but with the Vatican itself,’ he writes.
he has also famously said that katrina occurred as punishment for a gay pride parade.
john mccain was initially “very honored” to be endorsed by an openly anti-semitic, anti-catholic, anti-muslim, just all around bigot like hagee but quickly sought to distance himself when the fervor began. he stated:
“Yesterday, Pastor John Hagee endorsed my candidacy for president in San Antonio, Texas. However, in no way did I intend for his endorsement to suggest that I in turn agree with all of Pastor Hagee’s views, which I obviously do not.
“I am hopeful that Catholics, Protestants and all people of faith who share my vision for the future of America will respond to our message of defending innocent life, traditional marriage, and compassion for the most vulnerable in our society.”
okay fair enough. mccain doesn’t want to offend catholics or protestants (although he has curiously not repudiated hagee’s anti-gay, pro-apocalypse statements).
but then when pressed some more, mccain did another one of his famous 30 second flip flops:
STEPHANOPOULOS: So was it a mistake to solicit and accept his [Hagee’s] endorsement?
MCCAIN: Oh, probably, sure. […]
STEPHANOPOULOS: So you no longer want his endorsement?
MCCAIN: I’m glad to have his endorsement.I condemn remarks that are, in any way, viewed as anti-anything. And thanks for asking.
so it was a mistake to accept his endorsement, but 30 seconds later, mccain is glad to have had it?
and the clincher?
In an interview that will appear in this Sunday’s New York Times Magazine, controversial televangelist Rev. John Hagee declares, “It’s true that [John] McCain’s campaign sought my endorsement.”
so what exactly does john mccain repudiate? what does he believe in? does he believe in an apocalyptic showdown where jesus christ will step in and save the believers while slaughtering the non-believers? is that one of mccain’s beliefs?
does anyone have a clue? has anyone asked?
